Tech Geometry is Benson Polytechnic High School’s innovative geometry class. Our contextualized learning model helps students put mathematics into practice, applying theoretical concepts to actual construction projects. These assignments also provide students with valuable community-building experience, with assignments that include the construction of both a playhouse for Escuela-Viva, a Bilingual Preschool in the Benson neighborhood and a habitable cabin for residents of Dignity Village, a homeless encampment in North Portland. This interdisciplinary course is taught by a math teacher and an electric teacher, and grants two credits—one geometry credit aligned to the national Common Core State Standards and the curriculum of Portland Public Schools, and an elective credit earned for the construction portion of the course.
